This is what no one seems to be mentioning: getting rejected from a college is actually receiving a huge favor (especially if your numbers are good enough to get in nearly anywhere). What I mean is that admissions board who don't appreciate your sense of humor or perhaps your general sense of personhood are telling you that the school atmosphere won't appreciate these things either. I applied to college 5 years ago and had excellent test scores, an excellent GPA, took every AP course offered in my high school, was senior class vice president, captain of the varsity track team, had a lead in the school musical, and was a semi-professional trumpeter outside of school… but nonetheless, my essays about eating poison ivy for 20 bucks one time or how I speak with a thick Vermont accent didn't go over too well with Vanderbilt or Penn. This ended up being the best outcome because I would have gone to Vanderbilt, had I been admitted, over the University of Chicago, which is where I actually ended up going… and as it turned out, I immediately knew once I was there that the school that appreciated my "quirks" was much better for me than one that hosts fraternity balls.
